New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is understood to have given a go-ahead for participation of global players in 3G telecom services and approved one-time pricing for spectrum of existing players, a move which will generate an estimated Rs 40,000 crore revenue for government. According to sources, the Prime Minister gave the approval for one-time pricing beyond 6.2 MHz of spectrum (radio frequency) in terms of enhancing the spectrum fee by 1 per cent more of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of a cellular operator. Communication and IT Minister A Raja met Singh to appraise him of the 3G policy and the pricing of existing 2G spectrum. Cellular operators having beyond 8MHz of spectrum will be required to pay two per cent more of the AGR, sources said. Raja could not be contacted for his comments. These proposals will now be discussed in the Telecom Commission, a decision making body of the DoT, and thereafter it will be implemented. A senior DoT official said this kind of efforts have been taken for the first time in the history of telecom ministry. Sources also said before taking such decisions Raja also consulted Finance Minister P Chidambaram. (PTI)
