We have to win all games now, says Tendulkar

posted under by NSmurthy
After their third consecutive loss on Friday night in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians have to win their remaining five matches if they want to make the semi-finals.

Skipper Sachin Tendulkar said that his team has to push for a win in every match and put big totals on board.
"Whatever games are remaining, we have to win them all. We have been pushed to the corner and we will have to start to put up some big totals on the board," Tendulkar said.
On why he dropped himself down the order against Daredevils in the absence of Sanath Jayasuriya, Sachin said: "It was a tough call, for both me and Shaun Pollock (chief mentor). But sometimes you have to take certain decisions. Sanath took it sportingly and Luke was picked ahead of him.
"We were just trying out different combinations. I wanted to send Luke Ronchi up the order and figure out how he does. He looked pretty good in a couple of practice games."
Tendulkar said that his spinners have done a fantastic job and asked the batsmen to pull up their socks.
"I think the three games we won here have had contributions from lesser known players as well. There are certain things where one has to make a call. Our team as a unit has to perform," he said.

Kings XI beat Deccan Chargers, keep alive semi-final hopes

posted under by NSmurthy
Kings XI Punjab kept alive their hopes of making the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by pulling off a thrilling three-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers at the De Beers Diamond Oval here today.

Set a target of 169, Kings XI romped home with just one ball to spare after Man of the Match Mahela Jayawardene scored a match winning 43 off 28 balls.
Comeback man Andrew Symonds's power-packed unbeaten 60 was of no avail as Deccan Chargers' bowlers failed to defend their challenging 168 for five.
With the win, Kings XI jumped to the fifth spot with 10 points from as many matches while Deccan Chargers remained at the fourth spot with 10 points from nine matches.
Kings XI skipper Yuvraj Singh's decision to bowl first took everyone by surprise as Deccan Chargers openers Adam Gilchrist (20) and Herschelle Gibbs (13) gave them a run away start.
Symonds, who flew in from United Arab Emirates (UAE) Friday, came in with Deccan Chargers comfortably placed at 70 for three. Along with Venugopal Rao (32), the burly Australian added 95 crucial runs for the fifth wicket that took Deccan Chargers to a winnable position.
Deccan went past 100 in the 15th over, after which Symonds began attacking. He hit four sixes and two fours in his 36-ball innings and was particularly severe on Sreesanth, slamming him for two sixes and a four in an over in which the bowler conceded 20 runs.
The only bowler who commanded some respect from the Deccan Chargers' batsmen was Brett Lee. The 32-year-old Lee, who is coming back from an ankle injury, gave away just 24 runs from his four overs and picked up the important wicket of Rohit Sharma.
Kings XI also got a steady start, but Rohit pulled back things for Deccan Chargers by picking up the wickets of Sunny Sohal (30) and Simon Katich (9) in the fifth over.
Syed Mohammad Shoaib dismissed Kumar Sangakkara (25) and Yuvraj (18) in one over to put Deccan Chargers in the driver's seat. But it was the calm and composed 43 from Jayawardene that took Kings XI to within sniffing distance of a win. Lee then held his nerves with an unbeaten 14 to see Kings XI through with one ball remaining.

Badrinath, Hayden take Super Kings to top of IPL

posted under by NSmurthy
Kimberley: Subramaniam Badrinath and Matthew Hayden on Saturday took Chennai Super Kings to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table with a seven-wicket victory over title-holders Rajasthan Royals at the De Beers Diamond Oval here.

Super Kings, with 13 points, have now toppled Delhi Daredevils to emerge as the new leaders while Rajasthan Royals are in the third place with 11 points.
Electing to bat, Rajasthan Royals were restricted to 140 for seven by a disciplined Super Kings side. Man of the Match Badrinath (59 not out) and Hayden (48) then stitched a 89-run partnership to steer Super Kings home with 10 balls to spare.
Hayden, who has been in envious form this IPL, produced another impressive 44-ball innings but it was Badrinath who emerged the star of Chennai innings. Badrinath played a whirlpool innings off 41 balls that was studded with nine fours and a six.
Hayden and Badrinath steadied the Super Kings innings after Murli Vijay (10) and Suresh Raina (13) departed with only 37 runs on the board.
Hayden and Badrinath joined forces to rip apart the Rajasthan Royals bowling. Badrinath hit Shane Harwood for 20 runs in one over to put his side on the threshold of their sixth win.
Earlier, Super Kings bowled a tight length backed by a sharp fielding to tie down Rajasthan Royals to a modest total.
Albie Morkel gave Super Kings the breakthrough in the third ball of the match, clipping the bails of in-form batsman Naman Ojha. Graeme Smith (30) and Swapnil Asnodkar (26) then tried to repair the damage, adding 53 runs for the second wicket.
Asnodkar, who so far has been a pale shadow of his performance last year, showed signs of form in his 25-ball knock, which included in three fours and a six, but couldn't carry on for long, being trapped leg before by Muttiah Murlitharan in the ninth over.
Smith became Murlitharan's second victim when he was stumped by a composed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to leave Royals tottering at 75 for three.

Crucial win for Mumbai Indians

posted under by NSmurthy
Port Elizabeth: Unbeaten half-centuries from Jean Paul Duminy and Ajinkya Rahane got Mumbai Indians back to winning ways, as they beat Bangalore Royal Challengers by 16 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the St. George's Park here today.

The win was Mumbai Indians' first after three consecutive losses and it moved them to the sixth place. They have to win their remaining four matches if they want to make the semi-finals. Royal Challengers slipped to the seventh spot in the eight-team league and they have slim chances of making the last four.
Rahane (62 not out) and Man of the Match Duminy (59 not out) stitched a record 104-run stand for the third wicket as Mumbai Indians made 157 for two in 20 overs. Disciplined bowling by Mumbai Indians restricted Royal Challengers to 141 for seven in 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians also took sweet revenge of their humiliating loss to Royal Challengers in their previous meeting.
After deciding to bat, Mumbai Indians reverted back to their reliable opening combination of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya. Skipper Tendulkar, however, failed to open his account after he edged Vinay Kumar's away going delivery to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher in the second over.
Jayasuriya (29) then played some crisp shots to ensure that Mumbai Indians get advantage of the first Power-Play with 46 runs.

Daredevils crush Knight Riders, move to top of IPL table

posted under by NSmurthy
Johannesburg: Delhi Daredevils produced a clinical performance to crush Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) tie here on Sunday.

Chasing a meagre 124 runs, Daredevils romped home in 17.1 overs with AB de Villiers smashing 40 after David Warner (36) and Gautam Gambhir (18) laid the foundation.
Daredevils thus moved to the top of IPL standings with 14 points in nine matches, dislodging Chennai Super Kings.
Knight Riders again lost their way in the batting with Amit Mishra claiming three wickets, though Sourav Ganguly (44) and Ajit Agarkar (39) gave the bowlers something to defend.
The total was always going to be too small for a strong batting side like Daredevils.
Daredevils got off to a good start through Warner, who struck five fours and one six, and skipper Gambhir. They put on 53 runs in 40 balls.
Knight Riders sensed an opening as Gambhir and Warner fell within a space of two overs and then Tillekaratane Dilshan was out to a brilliant piece of catching by Moises Henriques in the deep.
But de Villiers and Dinesh Karthik (17 not out) carefully negotiated through the middle overs even as some catches and run-out chances went abegging.
De Villiers then hit a flurry of strokes to finish the match.
Earlier, Knight Riders made another shocking start, losing two wickets in the very first over.
Skipper Brendon McCullum hit a second ball six off Ashish Nehra, before the bad patch caught on with him and he was out lbw in the next ball.

IPL valued at over $2-bn, KKR richest team

New Delhi: Shahrukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders may be struggling at the bottom in the second season of Indian Premier League, but in terms of brand value it is the richest team of the twenty-twenty cricket tournament, whose collective valuation has been now pegged at USD two billion.

At the same time, Rajasthan Royals, partly owned by another Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, has emerged as the best team in terms of return on investment, although it is ranked third in terms of brand value.

"The entire enterprise is valued at USD 2.01 billion," Brand Finance said, adding, its methodology took into account various revenue lines such as broadcasting, IPL sponsorship, team sponsorship, merchandising and gate receipts as well as the effect of performance, the catchment population of the city, the capacity of the stadium and the presence of iconic players.
Among the eight teams, KKR has been ranked as the most valued with a brand value of USD 42.1 million, followed by Mumbai Indians (USD 41.6 million), Rajasthan Royals (USD 39.5 million), Chennai Super Kings (USD 39.4 million), Delhi Daredevils (USD 39.2 million), Royal Challengers Bangalore (USD 37.4 million), Kings X1 Punjab (USD 36.3 million) and Hyderabad Deccan Chargers (USD 34.8 million).

Pakistan shock India 3-2 in Asian Cup hockey

posted under by NSmurthy
Kuantan (Malaysia): Defending champions India were surprised with a 2-3 defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening league match of the 8th Asia Cup hockey here on Sunday.

In a rain-marred match that was halted for about 45 minutes in the second-half, Pakistan scored through Haseem Khan (33rd), Rehan Butt (36th) and Sohail Abbas (54th) while Prabhjot Singh (15th) and Rajpal Singh (45th) replied for India.
Pakistan, who scraped to a 1-1 draw with China with a late equalizer Saturday, thus entered the semi-finals by topping the three-team pool.
India need to beat China Monday, if they hope to make it to the semi-finals. Sunday's was the first league match of India in the tournament.
The Indians had their chances against the Pakistanis on Sunday, but as if by script, failed to convert these.
Pakistan played far better than in their opening fixture against China and put together several dangerous moves after falling in arrears midway through the first half when Prabhjot found the boards through a rebound from a penalty corner by skipper Sandeep Singh.
Stepping up the pace, Pakistan equalized when Haseem Khan cashed in on a defensive lapse and then Butt, for long the ace striker for his team, put them ahead within a minute of restart with a brilliant effort.
The Indians, to their credit, kept their composure and Rajpal Singh netted the equaliser from a Gurbaaj free-hit just as the showers intensified, leading to stoppage of the game immediately after the goal was signaled.
On re-start, India wasted a couple of penalty corners while at the other end, Abbas, the legendary drag-flick specialist, found the net 16 minutes from the end and Pakistan hung on to the lead for a well-deserved victory.

posted under by NSmurthy
London: Indian conglomerate Tata group-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is planning to raise up to 1 billion pound by September to keep the cash-starved company afloat without the British government's help, media report said.

According to a daily newspaper, "Tata is trying to raise up to 1 billion pound by September to keep Jaguar Land Rover afloat without government help." As per the report the Tatas have mandated financial adviser Citigroup to find banks with solid credit ratingprepared to underwrite some of the 340 million pound loan pledged by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The Tatas are also seeking to tap the debtmarkets to help secure the 500 million pound to 1 billion pound short-term financing package needed, the newspaper added.
"Even if Tata can raise more debt and find banks willing to underwrite part of the EIB loans, the cost of the financing will be very high," the news daily said.
The report further said the Tata Group, which controls Jaguar Land Rover through its subsidiary Tata Motors, will cut or freeze investment plans for new models. More redundancies from its 15,000-strong workforce are also likely.

Thanks to Varun, Pilibhit is a house divided

posted under by NSmurthy
Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh): Controversial Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Varun Gandhi appears to have polarised Pilibhit on communal and even caste lines like never before, making the outcome of the May 13 Lok Sabha poll here quite unpredictable.

Hindus, Muslims, Kurmis and Bengali migrants are openly speaking of voting for or against Varun Gandhi, who was reported to have delivered communal and inflammatory speeches in this constituency and was put in jail for it.
While he has become a Hindutva mascot here, Muslims are now going all out to favour his Congress rival V.M. Singh. This has happened in spite of the presence of a Muslim candidate fielded by the Samajwadi Party.
"There is a reason for Muslims to rally behind the Congress - its nominee V.M. Singh is seen as the most potent force against the BJP," Haroon Ahmad, a former Samajwadi Party leader who switched sides to the Congress, told media.
"Apart from being the only candidate with the desired capability of containing the BJP's new rabblerouser, V.M. Singh is also known as a messiah of the poor and the needy, particularly farmers. He will give Varun a run for his money."
However, there is no doubt that the slapping of the National Security Act (NSA) against Varun Gandhi by the state government and the subsequent refusal by a panel of the Allahabad High Court to ratify the decision have given a boost to his image.
Some see his effort to whip up Hindu passions as a strategy by his mother Maneka Gandhi to make people rally behind Varun Gandhi for whom she vacated the Pilibhit seat and moved to the neighbouring Aonla constituency.
According to a demographic study, of the 1.3 million voters in Pilibhit, 350,000 are Muslims and 100,000 are Sikhs. Considering that the constituency has about 850,000 Hindu voters, Varun Gandhi might just get a bulk of that vote.
"We will support Varun Gandhi because he speaks up for Hindus," remarked Rajesh, a young worker at a petrol station. Ranjit, a college student, felt he deserved Hindu support because he was ready to stand up for the community.
Things, however, seem to have gone wrong viz-a-viz the backward Kurmi community that is numerically dominant among Hindus, with as many as 250,000 voters.
Alleges local resident Kamlesh Gangwar, "There have been repeated incidents of assault on Kurmis by Varun Gandhi's henchmen in different parts of Pibilhit; so a large chunk of the community may not like to support him."
He said, "In the first incident, it was Varun himself who beat up Kurmi shopkeeper Bharat Vir Gangwar in Johra-Kalyanpur town simply because he had put up a Congress flag atop his shop."
The incident occurred well before the announcement of elections and an FIR was also lodged against Varun Gandhi in the matter.
He said, "At least 60-70 percent Kurmi voters will therefore vote for the Congress because it was V.M. Singh who helped them initiate action against Varun and his men."
Varun Gandhi may also not get the support of about 37,000 Bengali migrant voters settled in a particular part of Pilibhit due to a sustained BJP campaign calling them "Bangladeshis".
However, district BJP president Yogendra Singh Gangwar believes the election will be a cakewalk for Varun Gandhi. "That's simple because the poll is 'all others versus Varun'."
He also believes the Muslim candidate put up by the Samajwadi Party - Riaz Ahmad - will divide the community's votes.
"The fact that the Samajwadi Party has fielded a Muslim will take care of that and I am sure Muslims will get divided between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, making Varun's sail even smoother," Yogendra Singh Gangwar pointed out.(IANS)

Mulayam to adopt wait and watch policy

posted under by NSmurthy
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday said his party will decide on which political combine to support only after the election results are out and reiterated that he will go with the front that promises to dismiss the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh.
"We will decide after (the) elections... and we would like a secular government," Yadav said in an interview to a news channel.
"I will not go with the one which will not dismiss (Mayawati government)."
Holding the Congress responsible for the deteriorating relations between the two parties, he said: "I have never treated anybody (so that) that relations (should) deteriorate. Congress party has deteriorated the relations. They kept us away and gave seats to the party which had less number of seats."
The SP had supported the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government after the Left parties withdrew support on the Indo-US nuclear deal. But both the parties decided to go it alone in Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh after talks for a pre-poll alliance failed.
Asked about the possibility of going with the Third Front, Mulayam said: "Right now we are not ready to go with anybody. We will wait for the results and after results we will take opinion of Samajwadi party's Rashtriya Karyakarini Board and MPs and then decide."
On the ongoing fight between senior party leaders Azam Khan and Amar Singh, he said the former's behaviour has not been appropriate and "...after elections, the party will decide what is to be done".
Yadav said that he does not have any prime ministerial ambitions. "Mulayam Singh is not a contender for (the) prime minister's post."(IANS)

Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar shared the stage with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday at a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) election rally in Ludhiana, Punjab.
